When an oil boiler is replaced by a heat pump, the whole system is rarely replaced with it. Radiators, pipes and often underfloor heating circuits stay in place – and with them decades of accumulated sludge, rust and magnetite. It is a sound choice for the customer and for the green transition. But it puts new demands on what sits in front of the heat pump.
A heat pump is less forgiving than an oil boiler
A traditional oil boiler has a large water content and wide waterways. It can live with a fair amount of dirt in the system without visible harm. A heat pump is built differently:
- Plate heat exchangers with narrow channels, where even small particles can settle and reduce heat transfer.
- High-efficiency circulators with permanent-magnet rotors, which attract magnetite. The deposits increase wear and can, at worst, stop the pump.
- Low temperature differences and high flow requirements, where a partly clogged system quickly costs efficiency and comfort.
The result is a system that uses more electricity than expected, generates more service calls – and a customer who wonders why the new heat pump does not live up to its promise. Always check the heat pump manufacturer’s installation manual: many require filtration on the return.
Spirotech SpiroTrap HPF – designed for heat pump systems
Spirotech SpiroTrap HPF is a backwash filter with an integrated magnet, built for the higher demands of modern heat pump systems. It works in three stages:
- Pre-filter that directs the flow and captures coarse particles.
- Powerful magnetic separator that captures magnetite and other magnetic deposits.
- 160 µm fine filter that catches the remaining dirt before the water reaches the heat pump.
What makes it especially practical is the selector on the main housing. One turn switches between normal operation, backwashing and filter cleaning – with no extra shut-off valves. That means shorter installation time and a quicker, cleaner service visit afterwards.
Technical data – SpiroTrap HPF 22 mm

The high kvs value means a low pressure drop across the filter – important in a heat pump system, where the circulator should not waste energy pushing water through the filter.
When does it make sense?
- Replacing an oil or gas boiler with a heat pump in an existing radiator or underfloor system.
- Servicing existing heat pumps showing signs of sludge, magnetite or falling output.
- New installations, to protect the heat pump from day one – and make life easier for the service technician.
From the world of oil burners to heat pumps
Arne Nielsen A/S has supplied burners and spare parts for oil-fired heating for more than 50 years. We know the systems that heat pumps are now taking over – and what hides in the pipes. That is why SpiroTrap HPF is a natural part of our range for installers moving their customers to heat pumps.
