The people behind the burner: meet Mari Laakso from Oilon

Behind every burner we ship from our warehouse in Denmark are people who developed, tested and measured it long before it reached a boiler room. One of them is Mari Laakso, R&D Manager at Oilon in Finland.

From power plant burners to leading development

Mari started at Oilon as an R&D engineer working on burners for power plants and process industry. Industrial burners in smaller capacity ranges followed, and today she leads product development projects and heads Oilon’s testing and simulation team.

Much of her day is spent in the test hall, where new burners are measured for emissions and performance before they go to market. She also helps define burner solutions for new fuels such as biofuels – important work in the green transition, as many plants need to run on something other than fossil oil.

Ultra-low NOx

One result is Oilon’s ultra-low NOx burners, with nitrogen oxide emissions below 20 mg/Nm³ – far below EU limits. Figures like that don’t happen by themselves. They come from many hours of testing and tuning in exactly the kind of test boiler Mari is standing next to in the photo.

Out in the field

Mari also visits customers to see how the burners perform in practice. In her own words: “Through customer visits, I’ve had the opportunity to see how things work in the field.”

That link between the lab and the boiler room is what makes the difference – and it is the same link we work with every day when we advise on burners and spare parts.

A team that sticks together

Asked what makes the workplace special, Mari points to her colleagues: “My colleagues are what truly make this workplace special.” The team works toward common goals, and the team spirit goes beyond working hours. A group of colleagues trains cross-country skiing together and takes part in the Finlandia Ski Marathon every year. “I probably wouldn’t have participated in any of Finlandia Ski Marathon without this group,” she says.
