The story

From the workshop to the vessel

DESMI’s DesFuel pump is leaving the workshop. The Danish pump maker reports that its new deepwell fuel pump is finalised and ready to go on board an LNG-fuelled ferry — the first chance to prove the DesFuel concept in real vessel operation.

Claus Linding Olesen, Senior Mechanical Engineer at DESMI, has completed the pump together with a colleague from Nordan Marine A/S and is now taking the equipment on board for installation. Having followed DesFuel from the very beginning, he calls seeing the pump ready to go on board “a great feeling”.

According to DESMI, testing has shown very promising NPSHr performance, with a lower NPSHr than competing solutions. In practice, a low NPSHr gives the crew more freedom to draw the fuel tank further down while the pump keeps running reliably.

DesFuel was introduced in 2025 as a deepwell pump built for fuel flexibility. The motor, coupling and bearings sit outside the tank, a sealed magnetic coupling handles the hazardous fuel, and the pump and shaft can be removed from a caisson for service — without emptying or gas-freeing the tank.

Why it matters

Three reasons to watch DesFuel

Fuel flexibilityOne pump design for LNG, ammonia, methanol/ethanol and LPG
Low NPSHrMore of the tank volume usable, with reliable pump operation
Service without gas-freeingPump and shaft come out of the caisson while the tank stays closed
