Precise atomisation: how the nozzle decides the flame

The pump builds the pressure, but the nozzle decides the flame. Its task is to take pressurised oil and shatter it into a fine, even mist — with a controlled spray angle and a defined pattern — so that every droplet meets air and burns. Too coarse a spray and unburnt fuel soots the chamber; the wrong angle and the flame impinges where it should not. Steinen has been perfecting this single component in the USA since 1907, and precision at this scale is what separates a nozzle that simply passes oil from one that shapes combustion.

Two features stand out for demanding service. The Micro-Flo range delivers ultra-low flow rates for small and modulating burners, where accuracy at the bottom of the scale is hardest to achieve. The Twin-Filter design adds an inner 25 µm filter that increases filtering area by 62%, protecting the tiny atomising orifice from the particles that cause distorted spray patterns and premature failure — a real advantage on installations running older tanks or variable fuel quality.

Consistency is built in. Every Steinen nozzle is 100% tested, machined from 303/316 stainless steel, and made to CEN EN 293 / EN 299, with capacity in kg/h together with the spray angle and pattern stamped directly on the body. That stamping matters in the field: it lets an engineer confirm the exact specification of a nozzle already fitted, without guesswork, which is invaluable on a vessel or an offshore site far from a supplier.

Selection comes down to three variables read together — flow rate in USgal/h at 100 psi, spray angle such as 30, 45, 60 or 80°, and spray pattern (solid, hollow, partial hollow) — written, for example, as “0.50 60° ST”. Match all three to the burner and chamber and the flame is clean, stable and efficient; get one wrong and performance falls away. That is why we hold a broad range of sizes and patterns as spares for our Nordic, marine and project work, including the less common combinations that keep an older burner running exactly as intended.
